Some of the best discoveries happen by accident. A few years ago, while sightseeing outside of Frederick, Maryland, we took a wrong turn — or maybe the right one — and found ourselves winding toward a little town called Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. We spent the entire day there: wandering the historic streets, browsing the bookstore, watching the train roll in while eating ice cream from a tiny shop on the corner. By the time we left, we had already made a quiet promise to each other. This place was going to be home.
Three years later, it is. That same week we started searching for properties, and we found the one that would become The Mountain View Cottage — a warm, comfortable, split-level home nestled in the rolling hills just outside of Harpers Ferry. It has been one of the best decisions we've ever made.

We opened our doors in August 2023 and have since welcomed dozens of guests — families on summer getaways, hikers tackling the Appalachian Trail, couples celebrating anniversaries, and solo travelers looking for a quiet reset. We've even had a whole marriage proposal on the property (complete with guest-captured photos that still make us smile).
What makes the cottage feel special isn't just the location — it's the details. A cozy fireplace for winding down after a long day of exploring. A full game room and office setup downstairs for those who need to blend work and play.
A firepit oasis out back that's perfect for cool late-summer or early-fall evenings under the stars. We stay here ourselves when we visit, and we genuinely love it every time.

Harpers Ferry is one of those rare places that has something for everyone. History lovers can spend hours exploring the national historical park, the John Brown Museum, and the preserved 19th-century storefronts. Outdoor enthusiasts can hit the Appalachian Trail, kayak the rivers, or head to River Riders for lazy river tubing or white water rafting. And if you just want to slow down — the town itself, with its views of the confluence of two rivers and the Blue Ridge Mountains beyond, is reason enough to visit.
