Some of these products have served me well at all of my Airbnbs through the years. I also talk about the things I wish I had known prior to starting hosting and one of them is the value of hosting guests with pets. I even call it out in my top 10 hosting mistakes post — I wish I had made the decision to not operate based on emotions and had treated it as a real business from the start, and chosen to host guests with pets from day 1. Before I thought about hosting guests with pets, I thought about all the what-ifs, all the things that could go wrong — a never ending list of worst case possible scenarios.

Hosting guests with pets serves two purposes: you are able to give guests the joy of being able to travel with what they consider an essential part of their family. By hosting guests with pets you are also contributing to a memorable and value-added stay while increasing your visibility as a host and adding to your income as well.

Hosting guests with pets does come with its own struggles — like I discuss in my post about hosting my first guest, there will be pet hair everywhere and stains. If you hire the right cleaners (tools for which are laid out in my Hiring & Operations Playbook) and you arm your cleaners with the right tools, hosting guests with pets will not be as scary as it seems. 🚪 It Starts at the Door

First impressions matter — and that goes for your pet-friendly setup too. If you have a coir rug at the front door or this mat, it encourages guests to wipe their feet. In the same way, offering pet wipes will encourage pet owners to wipe their dog's paws in slushy or wet weather. Have dog paw wipes available right at the entrance. Baking Soda, a Pet Air Purifier, and an Open Door will be your three best friends. Baking soda can be applied to any pet stain and will help soak up the moisture and odor. A pet air purifier will filter out odors and refresh your home with cleaner air — quiet operation, improved air quality, and real effectiveness against pet-related allergens. If your house permits, a good old-fashioned breeze or open door helps too, though this is harder in certain climates.

When it comes to pet hair removal, our go-to combination is the Dyson V12 or V15 — the best vacuums we've found for pet hair by far. Pair either one with a rubber broom like Mr. Siga to scrape embedded hair out of carpet before vacuuming, the Chom Chom roller for furniture and soft surfaces, and Swiffer Dusters to finish the job — trapping fine pet hair and dander that everything else misses.

For deep stains in carpet and hard floors, a steam cleaner is a worthwhile investment. And a drain snake is great for clearing pet hair clogs in sinks and drains — easy to overlook until it's a problem.

Together with a good wiping of surfaces using a multi-purpose cleaner, the right floor tools cover every surface type and leave the space genuinely clean between guests.

Washable rugs are especially helpful in high-traffic areas like living rooms and bedrooms — when pet hair and dirt accumulate, you can simply throw them in the washing machine and they come out fresh.

A doggy bed or doggy blanket might not seem like a cleaning product, but they help your cleaners out greatly. Pets may be more inclined to stay within the doggy bed or blanket, which limits the quantity of pet hair spread all over the house. Pet gates help keep pets contained to specific areas if the owner prefers.

For cats, a nice scratch toy and easy-to-clean chew toys are helpful. A cat scratcher and cat bed might seem excessive, but the more time a cat spends in one particular place, the more the fur will be contained there rather than spread all over the house.
