In my Airbnb Essentials post I explained all of my top pick Airbnb products room by room. Some of these products I buy over and over again on repeat.

In a hurry? You can jump to the full list here.

Some of these products have served me well at all of my Airbnbs through the years. I also talk about the things I wish I had known prior to starting hosting and one of them is the value of hosting guests with pets. I even call it out in my top 10 hosting mistakes post — I wish I had made the decision to not operate based on emotions and had treated it as a real business from the start, and chosen to host guests with pets from day 1. In this post I call out my top picks for Airbnb Pet Friendly Cleaning Tools.

Pet supplies swag bag, pet blanket, and cleaning products at an Airbnb in Frederick, MD

If you're new here, good day! My name is Sam and I am an Airbnb Superhost with properties in Maryland and West Virginia.

Before I thought about hosting guests with pets, I thought about all the what-ifs, all the things that could go wrong — a never ending list of worst case possible scenarios.

Hosting guests with pets serves two purposes: you are able to give guests the joy of being able to travel with what they consider an essential part of their family. By hosting guests with pets you are also contributing to a memorable and value-added stay while increasing your visibility as a host and adding to your income as well.

Hosting guests with pets does come with its own struggles — like I discuss in my post about hosting my first guest, there will be pet hair everywhere and stains. If you hire the right cleaners (tools for which are laid out in my Hiring & Operations Playbook) and you arm your cleaners with the right tools, hosting guests with pets will not be as scary as it seems. In this post I will talk about my Top Picks For Airbnb Pet Friendly Cleaning Tools.

Otherwise, below is a breakdown of the tools that I would arm my cleaners with from day one.

🚪 It Starts at the Door

First impressions matter — and that goes for your pet-friendly setup too. If you have a coir rug at the front door or this mat, it encourages guests to wipe their feet. In the same way, offering pet wipes will encourage pet owners to wipe their dog's paws in slushy or wet weather. Have dog paw wipes available right at the entrance. Read more about how guests decide whether your Airbnb is worth 5 stars in the first 5 minutes.

🌬️ Odor Control

Baking Soda, a Pet Air Purifier, and an Open Door will be your three best friends. Baking soda can be applied to any pet stain and will help soak up the moisture and odor. A pet air purifier will filter out odors and refresh your home with cleaner air — quiet operation, improved air quality, and real effectiveness against pet-related allergens. If your house permits, a good old-fashioned breeze or open door helps too, though this is harder in certain climates.

Bamboo Charcoal Air Purifying Bags are another great passive option — activated charcoal odor absorbers that work quietly throughout the space without any effort on your end.

🧹 Hair Removal Tools

When it comes to pet hair removal, our go-to combination is the Dyson V12 or V15 — the best vacuums we've found for pet hair by far. Pair either one with a rubber broom like Mr. Siga to scrape embedded hair out of carpet before vacuuming, the Chom Chom roller for furniture and soft surfaces, and Swiffer Dusters to finish the job — trapping fine pet hair and dander that everything else misses.

Extra sticky lint rollers are essential for beds and soft surfaces where pet hair lingers. And don't overlook Vamoosh Pet Hair Remover for front-load washers — it dissolves pet fur in the washing machine and removes odor from pet bedding. Easy to use.

While you're thinking about linens, make sure you have enough sets to handle back-to-back pet stays — my Airbnb linen setup post explains exactly how I stock beds for easy turnovers.

🧼 Stain Removal

Folex and Miss Mouth's are great for getting out actual stains. For odor and deeper penetration, follow up with enzymatic cleaners — these break down the organic compounds that cause lingering pet smells rather than just masking them. Keep an all-purpose spray designed for pet messes on hand too — if you keep these in your Airbnb, guests will be more willing to use them if something happens.

For deep stains in carpet and hard floors, a steam cleaner is a worthwhile investment. And a drain snake is great for clearing pet hair clogs in sinks and drains — easy to overlook until it's a problem.

🧹 Floors, Surfaces & Contain-the-Mess Tools

Together with a good wiping of surfaces using a multi-purpose cleaner, the right floor tools cover every surface type and leave the space genuinely clean between guests.

Washable rugs are especially helpful in high-traffic areas like living rooms and bedrooms — when pet hair and dirt accumulate, you can simply throw them in the washing machine and they come out fresh.

A doggy bed or doggy blanket might not seem like a cleaning product, but they help your cleaners out greatly. Pets may be more inclined to stay within the doggy bed or blanket, which limits the quantity of pet hair spread all over the house. Pet gates help keep pets contained to specific areas if the owner prefers.

Waterproof pet feeding mats protect floors from spills, stay in place, and keep water contained. The Neater Feeder keeps food contained too. Designated pet towels in the Airbnb also help contain fur and moisture. For a complete list of what I keep on hand for last-minute turnovers, see my Airbnb Host Emergency Kit post.

🐱 Cat-Specific Picks

For cats, a nice scratch toy and easy-to-clean chew toys are helpful. A cat scratcher and cat bed might seem excessive, but the more time a cat spends in one particular place, the more the fur will be contained there rather than spread all over the house.

For cat-friendly Airbnbs, the Fumoi Automatic Litter Box is a game-changer — app-controlled with safety sensors and washable litter trays, it keeps things tidy between turnovers.

🐶 The Pet Welcome Experience

It's not just about cleaning — it's also about keeping furry friends happy. Nudges on-the-go dog treats make a great welcome snack, and a swag bag with a toy is a lovely touch. Think of it as part of your pet welcome basket — for more ideas on how to wow guests, check out my post on Airbnb welcome basket ideas guests will love.

Doggy poop bags and puppy pads are great for both catching accidents before they happen and providing cleanup afterward. A pet first aid kit is a thoughtful touch in case something happens to a furry friend, and leashes are handy just in case an owner forgot theirs. If you want a full breakdown of what to stock in every room, my 25 Most Overlooked Airbnb Essentials list is a great place to start.

🧹 Hire & Train the Right Cleaner

Hire the right cleaner from the start. My Hiring & Operations Playbook tells you step by step how to hire the right cleaner and not just someone you "like." And once you have the right person, make sure they know exactly what a pet-friendly turnover looks like — see my full Airbnb Turnover Checklist for the complete reset process.

Train your cleaner on how to reset the house after every checkout. If you're not sure where to start, my turnover checklist walks through everything step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best vacuum for pet hair in an Airbnb?

The Dyson V12 and V15 are my top picks — they handle pet hair on every surface type and hold up to the wear of frequent turnovers. Pair either one with a rubber broom to scrape embedded hair out of carpet before vacuuming.

How do I get pet smell out of my Airbnb?

The trio that works best for me: baking soda on stains to absorb odor, a pet air purifier running between stays, and opening windows or doors to air the space out. Bamboo charcoal bags also work passively to absorb odors throughout the home.

Should I charge a pet fee at my Airbnb?

Yes — a pet fee helps offset the extra cleaning time and supplies required for pet-friendly stays. Most hosts charge $75-$120 per stay depending on property size. The fee signals to guests that you take pet-friendly hosting seriously, and it covers the cost of the tools in this list.

What's the best stain remover for pet accidents in a rental?

Folex and Miss Mouth's are my go-tos for actual stains. For odor and deeper penetration, follow up with an enzymatic cleaner — these break down the organic compounds that cause lingering pet smells rather than just masking them.

Is it worth it to allow pets at my Airbnb?

Absolutely. Pet-friendly listings tend to see higher booking rates, fewer vacancy gaps, and more loyal repeat guests — because finding a pet-friendly rental is genuinely hard for travelers. The extra prep is manageable once you have the right tools and a trained cleaner. I cover the full mindset shift in my post on my top 10 hosting mistakes.
